It is a designer's worst nightmare: sending 50,000 product booklets to press, only to realize the printed code will not register under older smartphone cameras. Let's review the structural rules to prevent print failures.
1. Scale to Proper Minimum Bounds
Avoid making modules microscopic. A safe rule of thumb for standard hand-scanned items:
- Minimum Size: Maintain a footprint of at least 2 x 2 cm (0.8 x 0.8 inches) for optimal scannability.
- Scan Ratio: Maintain a 10:1 distance-to-size scanning ratio (e.g., if scanners stand 1 meter away, the code should be 10 cm wide).
2. Never Invert Contrast
Many consumer cameras look explicitly for dark pixels overlaying light backgrounds. Avoid printing white codes over deep charcoal bases if possible. Ensure a minimum 4.5:1 contrast ratio between your visual foreground modules and target backdrop planes.
